What to do before your Duke of Ed adventurous journey

Before you set off on your Adventurous Journey, please remember that your Award Unit (Auckland Challenge) must approve your plans first. This is a big part of the Award process and ensures your journey meets the required standards for safety and Award requirements.

Why is approval necessary?

  • The Award has specific guidelines for Adventurous Journeys.
  • Your Award Unit is responsible for checking that your plans meet these guidelines.
  • All journeys must meet the health and safety requirements of your Award Unit - Auckland Challenge
  • Approval helps keep you safe and ensures your experience counts towards your Award.

How do we approve your journey?
We rely entirely on:

  • The information you enter into the Online Record Book (ORB).
  • Any details you share with us directly (e.g., in conversations or emails).

The more complete and accurate your ORB entry and communication, the faster we can approve your journey.

Check the requirements first
Please review the Journey resources in acorn.aucklandchallenge.org.nz and look at the requirements here . This outlines what is expected for your Adventurous Journey and will help you complete your ORB entry correctly.

Talk to your Award Leader
It is always a good idea to have a conversation with your Award Leader before submitting your plans. They can guide you through the requirements and help ensure your journey is suitable. Remember to do your training first and put it in your ORB.

✅ ORB Checklist – Make sure you include:

  • Journey type (Practice or Qualifying)
  • Dates and duration
  • Route details (including start and finish points)
  • Mode of travel
  • Group members
  • Supervisor/Assessor details
  • Training completed
  • Purpose or aim of the journey

Next steps:

  1. Read the attached Journey Requirements carefully.
  2. Speak with your Award Leader if you have any questions.
  3. Log in to the ORB and make sure your journey details are complete.
  4. Submit your plan for approval before you start your journey.
  5. Wait for confirmation from Auckland Challenge before proceeding.

If you need help with the ORB or have any questions, please contact us dofe@aucklandchallenge,org.nz

Thank you for following the process – it helps us support you and keep your Award on track!
